Urban Missions

Hope for the Cities

“You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matt 5:14

What is Urban Missions?

Urban Missions seeks to share the love of Christ and the Gospel to urban communities, ultimately leading to Disciplemaking Church Plants (DCPs) taking root and bearing fruit in these communities.

Why Urban Missions?

Cities of the world are crucial places for the Great Commission, as more people now live in cities than in rural areas. This is where four major kinds of people are mostly found:

  • Next generation of young people
  • Unreached peoples who have migrated
  • Poorest of the poor
  • People significant in shaping the course of culture

How do we do Urban Missions?

Covenant EFC partners with like-minded churches and agencies in cross-cultural communities to bring hope to those who are struggling in the cities by:

Our partner church in the Philippines shared, “Covenant EFC was one of the main players in the relief, recovery and development of Leyte and Samar region during the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013. Our engagement with the victims and their communities not only helped their livelihood but resulted in the establishments of several local churches.”

HEALING through Healthcare Missions

Healthcare Missions provide inroads to communities that are difficult to reach. It also serves as a non-threatening platform to build friendships with pre-believers and show them the love of Christ.

A Healthcare Missions core team member shared, “We work with local partners to treat the patients in these communities, and as we do, we share the Gospel to them. We also give professional healthcare talks to the local partners, who then used what they learnt to continue the work in these communities. Healthcare Missions is not just for healthcare workers. We also need people to serve in triage, dispensary, and as befrienders and health ambassadors.”

REBUILDING through Disaster Relief Missions

Disaster Relief Missions brings hope after a devastating natural disaster, enabling communities to get back on their feet with the help of volunteers who heeded God’s call. These communities received food, water and medical supplies as well as a helping hand to rebuild their homes and schools. These efforts last for several years so that support is sustained to help them be self-reliant again.

Disaster Relief Missions Overseer shared, “So far more than 20 churches had been planted by our Filipino partners as a result of the relief and rebuilding efforts. All glory be to God!”

TEACHING through Steady Readers Missions

The Lord first led us to set up children’s libraries in marginalised communities in the Philippines, but we soon discovered that these children and youths were unable to read. Through many confirmations and God’s providences, Steady Readers Missions was birthed and launched in 2016 to teach teachers and pastors phonics skills so that they can teach their community children. Many of the children have since improved and even received recognition awards from schools. Mothers also formed separate classes to learn phonics. These families started attending Sunday services resulting in church growth.

Steady Readers Missions Overseer shared, “We believe in community transformation through literacy. Praise God for using Steady Readers Missions to reach communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

LOVING through Marginalised Community Missions

Loving the orphans, street kids, and the homeless is what we do in Marginalised Communities Missions. We organise short-term missions trips to minister in orphanages, slums, and refugee camps by providing food and programmes related to health and education. “Most importantly, we share with them the love and hope in Christ,” our overseer for Marginalised Community Misssions shared.
